Hot Foil Stationery

Hot foil stationery also is known as hot foil stamping, is a process that uses heat, pressure, metal dies and foil film and is considered a specialty printing process. In this foil come in rolls and a wide range of finishes, colours and optical effects. The most common type of foil used nowadays is the metallic foil, also gold foil, silver foil, copper foil, and holographic metallic foils are popular options. These foil rolls are also available in solid colours and both glossy and matt finishes.
In the old days, foil printing was done using hand-set lettering or custom engraved dies. Printing foil stamping was so labor-intensive, early foil stamping was primarily restricted to book covers and literary titles. To print gold text on a book cover, printers used separate fonts of lead or brass type, with text assembled by hand, one letter at a time, or a custom engraved die with a single image. Once the text or die is assembled, it was loaded into a press, which is then pressed on thin sheets of metallic foil into a book cover or other material. The hot foil printing process is somewhat similar to letterpress and engraving, in which colour applied to paper with pressure. Once the design finalised, metal dies are created in the desired shape for each colour foil to be applied for a particular design. The dies are heated and then stamped with enough pressure to seal a thin layer of foil to the paper, and each color is applied individually through multiple runs of the press to create the final design. A final die may also be created if an embossed (raised) image or effect is desired for the design.
Foil is an opaque material and is unlike thermography, lithography and letterpress, hot foil printing does not make use of any ink. Therefore the foil color does not change based on the color of paper on which you are printing. Thus, making metallic or lighter color foil is great for darker or colored papers.
